 on novelty and originality

Announceslookis writes "It seems that apart from the DS whose new balance shall be compared to Datograph's the 1815 chronograph, poor and slightly cluttered on the dial (why that peripheral ring with the pulsometer and not a proper crisp flat face) is a diluted Datograph. There is little new coming on, no originality on case design and braking new ground. Needless to say that the historicisation of the firm is to an extent marketing literature and not genuine tradition. The 5070 of PAtek seems to compare most favourably versus the datograph. Willing to have comments and harsh criticism on all- Lookis

In addition Lange distribution is fine but often lacking in depth of knowledge e.g. Berlin better than London, Hamburg very good. Athens the Kessaris unit had some excellent people esp. a Mr. Vizenzatos and the two ladies but the firm is mor on the jewelry neoclassicism. Good to see a more horologophilic approach rather than the rounded Germanic only and references to function rather that exemplary finish

Dear Lookis,

Thanks for a very interesting viewpoint.

Firstly, your comments on the railway track on the peripheral ring is spot on! That is why the new, revised production Double Split will not feature this track.

But I have to completely disagree with you that you can compare the Patek 5070 to a Datograph. The following are some of my supporting points:

1. The L951 used in the Datograph is a completely new, from ground up column wheel chronograph for a long time. The PP 5070 uses a Lemania ebauche, but finished to excellent Patek standards, and have the balance wheel replaced by a Gyromax.

2. The L951 features a jumping minute counter. This is a world premiere. Some other chronographs feature a similar jump counter, but the way the jump is executed puts the Datograph on its own pedestal, sans peer. The jump is immediate, crisp, whereas in its execution for example in the GO Panograph or IWC Flieger, the counter creeps forward, and then jumps.

3. The physical layout of the chronograph works is stunning! Here is revived many traditional watchmaking arts - sharp edges, design and shape/layout of the chrono levers. The layering of the chrono works on top of the 3/4 plate, and the stunning 3 D look of the movement when viewed from the display back. And of course the finishing is absolutely stunning.

4. The massive and extremely heavy Platinum case which provides a kind of focussed weight on one's wrist - some thing hard to describe, but Datograph owners will understand what I am talking about.

This is a completely new, original, groundbreaking chronograph...one of the great achievements of twentieth century modern watchmaking.

The Double Split builds on this. The world's first for a double split, double jump counters. Inhouse produced balancespring and balance wheel which features a new gyromax like mass adjustment system. The clutch system for the split seconds hand. And again, the tremendous success of the 3D layering effect of the movement. Critics focus on the red power reserve indicator, on the dial design, on the massiveness of the case. And some of these criticism is justified - Lange has made steps to change some of them - no red PR indicator, removal of the railway track, and reinstatement of the "A. Lange & Sohne" in curved text around 12 o'clock, widening of the lugs to make a more pleasing balance of the case.

I think the DS is beautiful. I will be getting one for assesment in few weeks, and I will post my impressions.
